Peel Student Research

Voices: A Study of Youth in Peel

In 2012, with the support of the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB) and the Peel District School Board (PDSB), PCYI undertook a large (n=2,187) randomized survey of secondary school students within randomly selected schools and classes across Peel Region to better understand their experiences, interests and attitudes about recreational and after school activities. The overall response rate was 80%.

The survey inquired about a wide range of organized activities that youth might engage with (e.g., sports teams, special interest clubs, fine arts, volunteering, part-time work). It asked about less structured activities like time with friends, homework, and ‘screen time’ (e.g., internet surfing, cell phones, gaming, social media), and where they found opportunities for casual sports and physical activity (e.g., bike riding, walking).

One finding indicated that students were interested in learning about their post-secondary options. In April 2014, PCYI released a companion report to the Voices study to examine how to best keep young people informed about post-secondary opportunities.
